After a vicious attack in her home, Kanak in India turned to the police \u2013 but they also refused to help her. Thankfully, Open Doors partners rushed to support her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A violent attack in Kanak\u2019s home<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was petrified when extremists attacked us,\u201d remembers Kanak* in India, \u201cbut I had to take courage to help my believers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day that religious extremists attacked her house is still stark in Kanak\u2019s memory. She and her husband Peter* were gathered with members of their church, praying together at home. The hall was packed with men, women and children. And suddenly Kanak heard the sound of stones pelting on the walls and roof of their house.<\/p>\n\n\n

The reason? The religious extremists weren\u2019t happy that increasing numbers of people were coming to these prayer gatherings. So they got weapons, formed a mob and descended on the house. These militants had sticks, pipes and iron rods. They forced their way into the home, and started violently attacking Kanak, Peter and the other assembled Christians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThough I was in much pain, I could not bear to see my brothers and sisters going through the same,\u201d says Kanak. \u201cI gathered all my strength and protected the believers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter called the police and, on their arrival, the extremists left the place. Later, Kanak and Peter, with the help of local pastors, attended to the believers with medical aid and also got themselves treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Death threats continue after the attack<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kanak and Peter\u2019s ministry is driven by the same compassion and care. She has long been determined to work among the poor and underprivileged, particularly children. Kanak is particularly proud of the community school that she and Peter have started for local children who wouldn\u2019t be able to afford other schooling. The couple thank God every day for using them in ministry, and find joy in serving the deprived.<\/p>\n\n\n

After this attack, though, Kanak and Peter had to end their ministry. They were still being threatened by the extremists \u2013 even with death threats. \u201cThe incident changed my whole life, says Kanak. \u201cI had to leave the place where God called me to ministry; I had to let go of my people who were like family to me and had to hand over the community school to others that was dear to me. I felt like I had come to the end of a tunnel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church stopped gathering, because the believers were so gripped with fear. The police won\u2019t help any of the Christians, because they\u2019re under the influence of the religious extremists. Kanak and Peter thought they didn\u2019t have anyone to turn to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open Doors partners help, thanks to you<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But God hadn\u2019t abandoned Kanak and Peter, of course. He sent local Open Doors partners \u2013 who were able, thanks to your prayers and gifts, to come alongside Kanak. They prayed with her, encouraged her and helped the couple find a new home in a different city. Since Kanak and Peter didn\u2019t have any source of income in this new place, Open Doors partners are also helping with groceries for a few months.<\/p>\n\n\n

“God’s light shined through your help.”\r\n<\/p> KANAK<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe help and intervention of Open Doors partners is like a ray of hope peeping through the dark tunnel,\u201d says Kanak. \u201cIt reminds me of John 1:5: \u2018The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCertainly, God\u2019s light shined through your help and assured me that nothing can prevail against the will of God,\u201d Kanak adds. \u201cI thank the organisation [Open Doors] for helping my family in our time of need, and assuring us of your constant prayers and encouragement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Kanak cannot go back to her home as the extremists are still seeking opportunities to target and harass her and Peter. But she believes Jesus will make a way for her, and will always stand by her side. Pray for Kanak and her family as they rebuild their lives in a new place and seek to share their testimonies with others in their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
